in my mind

In my mind
I’m always walking away
Down that green
cliff path
To the far singing sea,
With my hazel pole
Setting the pace,
Counting the beat,
Feeling the way,
for my blessed,
falling feet.

And I walk away down
that path again,
Switch-backed,
Swinging,
Sweet soul singing,
Down the green
cliff side,
Moss heather, ferns
and wild-flowering
thyme,
The white wool blowing
And the black sheep scats,
The sea of air
and air of sea,
Salt scented, soul centred,
The tortured, twisted pine,
the ocean and me.
And every step I take
Is an exultation,
A hammer blow,
To leave behind
My own sad self,
The wild
caged me
and for a little while
to walk away
and inside to be
free.
